My First Bag Making Workshop at Prior Shop

Last weekend I taught my first sewing workshop at Prior Shop in Bristol City Centre. It's funny that after 9 years of making bags it's only now I feel the confidence to teach what I know to others (maybe it had something to do with my Imposter Syndrome who knows!). Anyway, I hope to build up my workshops over the next year and be able to offer a range of classes aimed at different levels of skill and potentially even offer longer courses. I've found it really rewarding to be able to share my skills with others and the social aspect is also very much welcome!

THE SPACE AT PRIOR SHOP

You may know that I stock my work in Prior Shop and have done since their Old Market store opened back in March 2019. Now they have a fabulous new (and huge) space in the very posh Quakers Friar area of Bristol, near Cabot Circus (if you haven't been you really must!). They also have a huge workshop area at the back of the shop which I'm now holding my classes in. The space is perfect for sewing workshops and I can comfortably host between 5-7 people and it doesn't feel crowded.

THE WORKSHOP

I decided my first workshop would be a beginner bag making class aimed at people who had never used a sewing machine before, or who had little experience. I wanted to focus mainly on the construction of the bag so provided the materials ready cut, so no pattern cutting needed on this one, plus it was important for the participants to be able to complete the bag in the 3 hour time limit.

I began the workshop explaining the various aspects of the sewing machine and then went through how to thread it correctly.

We then started constructing the outer part of the bag, and then the lining, which also included a small slip pocket.

Once the outer and inner parts of the bag were completed we added the straps and then finally attached some rivets on the outside to help strengthen the straps but also add an aesthetic quality.

THE FINISHED BAGS

TAH DAH! Look at my lovely students with their beautiful new bags, and all sewn from scratch in less than 3 hours, impressive!
Thanks to Lynda, Catherine, Nicky and Claudia for being such great guests and thank you to Yuup for providing me with a photographer for the session.
